Moths collected by HLF Guermonprez

HLF Guermonprez (1858 – 1924) was a naturalist who lived in Brighton for over 30 years. He was an avid collector and during his lifetime amassed an extensive collection of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), taxidermy, plants, shells and fossils that he collected from around Bognor Regis and the counties of West and East Sussex. Twenty years after his death, Guermonprez's family offered the collection to the local museum in Bognor Regis. In the 1970s, with the closure of the museum, the Guermonprez Collection was transferred to Portsmouth Museums, which holds the collection in Trust.

This drawer of moths is one of many collected by HLF Guermonprez. Under each moth is a label stating where and when it was found. Work on cataloguing the moth collection, which numbers thousands of specimens, has already filled gaps in knowledge for moth records of Sussex between 1900 and 1920.
