Liking the Lichens

Here is one of eighteen drawers of lichens collected in the 19th century, which was recently found in our collections.  Many of them were collected by Reverend William Allport Leighton (1805 – 1889) who wrote the Flora of Shropshire (1841) after getting interested in plants by Charles Darwin who attended the same school as him.

W.A. Leighton later worked on lichens and published his Lichen Flora of Great Britain in 1871.
